Subnational Transparency in Nigeria: A Crawling Journey

June 11, 2019

Nigeria, in a bid to curtail corruption, and promote accountability and transparency in its public sector, joined the Open Government Partnership (OGP) in 2016. This bold step shifted the focus of civil society organizations from mere advocacy to influencing decision making in governance. Subnational OGP process kick-started in 2017 as Kaduna state became the first state in Nigeria to be signed into the OGP initiative, a year after the federal government joined the multilateral initiative.

The status of subnational inclusion in Nigeria is considered remarkable, following the global recognition received by Kaduna State Government at the OGP Summit in Georgia, July 2018.

On the heels of this development, several other states – Kano, Ondo, Oyo, Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Niger, Abia, Edo, Bayelsa, Jigawa and Rivers – have all began processes for inclusion.
